3 Simple Steps to Prostate Cancer Prevention

The prostate is the second leading source of cancer in men (behind skin), so prostate cancer prevention should be high on your list of priorities.

It's estimated that one in every six men will develop prostate cancer at some point, but, fortunately, science is getting better and better at detecting and treating the disease.

Instead of waiting around for a cure-all vaccine, however, you should be taking steps now to ensure that your prostate is as healthy as possible.

3 Simple Steps to Prostate Cancer Prevention

  1. Have More Sex – Easier said than done, right? But, it's the actual ejaculation that benefits you, rather than the actual act of having sex.

"Seminal fluid contains substances that are carcinogenic," says Graham Giles, PhD, the lead study author. "Regular ejaculation may help flush them out."

Studies suggest that 21 ejaculations per month lowers risk of prostate cancer by nearly a third as compared to 4-7 ejaculations.

  2. Scream for Lycopene – When choosing any tomato-based products (i.e. ketchup, pasta, etc.) look for the highest levels of lycopene on the label. Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes, and a 2004 study showed only 2 servings per week reduced prostate cancer risk by nearly 30 percent.
  3. Hit the Bottle – Resveratrol is an antioxidant found in red wine that may help inhibit the growth of prostate cancer.

But, be careful: Too much alcohol can not only remove the beneficial effects, but also cause other health problems. The recommended amount is about 4-8 glasses per week.

With regards to prostate cancer, or any other disease for that matter, it's much better to be proactive than reactive. Why deal with the stress and possible long-term health effects, when you can simply prevent them in the first place?
