Blocked Sinuses? Clear Them With Humming!
Blocked sinuses can be a major nuisance. Besides sounding like you're auditioning for an animated movie role, not being able to breathe clearly and easily can bring anyone down, physically and mentally.
Your first line of defense may be to run to the pharmacy and start shooting chemicals up your nose that you can't even pronounce. This may provide temporary relief, but what if there was a way to achieve the same results that's completely safe and free?
Oh, and it's fun too!
Humming. No, that isn't some special medical term with a double meaning. I'm talking about the actual act of "singing" without the words.
Jon Lundberg and Eddie Weitzberg, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, discovered that the vibration caused by humming can help ventilate and clear blocked sinuses.
Their definition of humming, used in the study, was simple: Exhale while making a sound and keeping your mouth closed.
Jon and Eddie tested 10 participants and found that their nitric oxide levels increased by up to 15 times, compared to simply exhaling without humming.
This is important because higher nitric oxide levels mean air can travel more freely through the sinuses and nose. The vibrations help sway the air back and forth between your nasal passages and sinus membranes.
Keeping your sinuses clear is more important than you think. Sinus membranes swell to help filter the germs out of the air you breathe, so all those nasty critters don't have a clear path to your vulnerable lungs.
However, if they swell too much, then mucus can get blocked and be trapped with nowhere to drain. If this isn't quickly remedied through humming (or those less entertaining and more expensive nasal sprays), bacteria begins to thrive, which could cause a more serious condition called sinusitis.
Hardly anything with -itis on the end of it is ever very pleasant, so start humming your way through those blocked sinuses, even if you are completely off key and out of tune!
