Introduction
Tom Hanks, one of Hollywood’s leading men, has always been a favorite of mine when it comes to the movies from ‘When Harry met Sally’ all the way to ‘Angels and Demons’ that was released this year. But there’s one role that is laudable in my humble opinion, playing a corrections officer at Louisiana’s Cold Mountain Penitentiary in the movie, The Green Mile.

And no, this is not a artsy-fartsy review of Stephen King’s novel upon which the movie is based, but it was the first thing that came to mind as Tom fell to his knees while struggling with the excruciating pain while trying to pass urine (which is what we’re discussing here).

Well, to put it bluntly it’s like getting kicked in the balls, a knife in your back or whatever makes you go numb with pain!

And this will also remind you of the time you would go ‘ouch’ when you watch your favorite athlete taking an unexpected hit in the nuts. And all those delightful ball-breaking memories come flooding back…

Strange déjà vu, it seems.

And the experience of getting kicked in the nuts (Read: any trauma or illness in the pubic area) will change your life forever. And then you begin to contemplate your life as a man…

But I digress as we’re talking about kidney stones here…

Here’s a video that provides information on kidney stones.

Kidney Stones – Symptoms
Well, it’s pretty obvious to most of us (health-conscious or not) that when a stone is formed in your kidney, and passes through the urinary tract… you will know what pain is!

In most cases, the pain is either the dull, toothache variety at one side of your back or the sharp pain that occurs in waves and makes you feel like you’re being carved up by a gourmet chef in the abdominal region, not surprisingly leaving you in those tantric positions (that you see in these yoga classes) to ease the pain.

Either this is something you’ve learned off by second-hand experience (watching a loved one suffer) or have experienced it yourself first-hand. These situations you find yourself in is anything but gratifying, as you’ll conclude!

A couple of other common symptoms include:
1. Blood in your urine.
2. Fever
3. Vomiting
4. Urine that smells bad or looks
5. A burning sensation while urination

Now that we’re aware of the common symptoms, let’s look at the treatments that involve removing the kidney stones, and more importantly, the pain that gives it such a scary reputation.

Kidney Stones – Treatment
Depending on the seriousness of the patient’s condition, several options are available for treatment, and which will be recommended by your physician once they complete the urine tests that are required to make an accurate diagnosis.

Of the kinds of treatment to remove the stone, the simplest are to increase hydration levels as well as completely stop food that have are either caffeine-based or dairy-related products. In some cases, it works in removing the stone… and you’ve been lucky if you’re one of them!

But for the not so lucky ones, other procedures such as shock wave treatment, tunnel surgery, the Ureteroscope procedure as well as a full scale surgery are available to remove the stone as required.

And your physician will tell you which one is best for you so there’s nothing to worry about other than taking care of yourself.

Conclusion
As the introductory video to what a kidney stone is suggests that the chances of a person who has had a kidney stone in the past is more likely to get another one. What this suggests that it’s not enough to get yourself seen by a doctor but you have to ensure that you maintain a diet in order to ensure that it never happens again. And if you’re the types who doesn’t learn from experience, the pain should serve as motivation to maintain a decent diet through exercise and nutrition, ensuring that you will never have to go through another kidney stone emergency ever again.

Introduction
When we talk about taste, I’m reminded of the rock star Michael Hutchence (of INXS fame) who lost his taste (read: no or damaged taste buds) in an accident with a postal truck.

The tragedy of it all was that Michael Hutchence had millions of dollars with which he could have savored the finest meals in the best restaurants around the world, but with no taste… it wouldn’t matter whether he ate sandpaper or did the whole caviar and wine thing!

Taste Buds: Important facts
By now its common knowledge that the taste buds (called taste receptor cells at a cellular level) are located in the mouth, and obviously its function is to taste the nourishment that is a part of our daily routine, and send the information to the brain based on the

Of course, you should also know that the five elements of taste are salty, sour, bitter, sweet, and umami (or savory), and for at least once in our lifetimes, we would have felt how each of these elements really taste.

From the example of Michael Hutchence, it’s pretty obvious that our taste buds are irreplaceable and therefore should be taken care of, as much as possible especially when they’re inflamed which we’ll discuss next.

Inflammation in the Taste Buds: Causes
Since the direction of this piece of writing is to help you to avoid inflammation of the taste buds, which will leave that proverbial bad taste in your mouth (winky wink), it’s important to list the common causes of inflammation in the taste buds. And I say causes (not cause) because there can be several reasons for the occurrence of an inflammation in your taste buds.

Here’s a list of causes (some of them are self-explanatory):
1. Age
2. Disease
3. Exposure to toxins like tobacco smoke and insecticides
4. Heredity
5. Infections
6. Injury
7. Laryngectomy
8. Oral Inflammation
9. Radiation therapy
10. Vitamin deficiencies
11. Endocrinal disorders such as Hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism, and diabetes mellitus, and dental problems
12. Certain herbs and supplements (such as chewing gymnema leaves)

One thing’s for certain with each of these causes for inflammation is that you’ll understand the value of being able to taste apart from the other perceivable effects that will help you realize how important it is to be careful wherever and whenever you can.

Inflammation of Taste Buds: Effects
For one, you won’t be able to taste a particular food or drink properly like before. Irritation and swelling in the particular area are the most common effects.

What you can do about it
In the case of bites and scratches (and all I can think of is naughty naughty here), it’s not that serious as you can apply glycerin to the affected area. In the case of burns, chewing on ice chips as well as eating soft and cold foods will help relieve the pain as well as prevent the affected area from being aggravated. However, if you aren’t able to determine the source of the infection, it is better to consult a doctor immediately before turning to grandmomma’s home remedies.

In Closing
There no need to go loco because of the Michael Hutchence example given earlier as it is rare, and under circumstances of extreme trauma… but that doesn’t mean you can afford to careless with your health. After whose gonna pay for it, with your pocket (and your tongue). You, of course.

Introduction
We see examples of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis every day. In your normal life, you would have encountered one such person if you don’t have it yourself.

One such friend had greasy palms and armpits that would require him to change shirts frequently in a day, and he was no stranger to the remarks that would do the rounds unbeknownst to him, thanks to the unusual body odor.

Perhaps if people knew why that happened they could’ve been a little more sensitive to this embarrassing affliction that was no fault of the guy. Strangely enough, regardless of these rude first impressions he went to become the president of our college.

To me that was one heck of a social comeback! But let’s read on to understand the stigma that excessive perspiration can cause so that we can sensitive to people who have to deal with this on a daily basis.

Perspiration
First and foremost, it is a normal thing to sweat or perspire. And how does this happen?

All mammals have sweat glands as we all and are further divided into two types of glands such as the apocrine and merocrine sweat glands. The Apocrine sweat glands in mammals are in the area of the armpits, groin and around the nipples.

Apocrine glands are much lesser in number as compared to its well-spread counterpart, the merocrine sweat glands that are located all over the surface of your body extending from the inner to the outer layers of the skin.

This type of sweat gland is located greater concentration on the skin of our palms and soles as compared to the other parts of our body.

So why do we sweat?
Firstly, thermoregulation is very important for the body especially at times of excess activity, where the sweat excreted cools the surface of the skin and hence reduces body temperature. Secondly, it also works as a route to get rid of excess electrolytes and water that is a part of our body. Thirdly and finally, it protects our body from environmental hazards such as harmful chemicals and the growth of bacteria on our body.

So, by now you should’ve figured that it’s a good thing to sweat unlike our four-legged friends who just ‘sweat it off’ by panting.

Just like all things that can turn harmful when excessive in nature, sweating in large amounts is not only harmful for the body as well as cause danger and embarrassment (as in my friend’s case). So let’s look at the reason why excess sweating takes place…

Cause for excessive perspiration or sweating
Doctors and researchers have concluded that the reason for this phenomenon to occur is mostly hereditary. As sweating is a function that is controlled by the autonomous nervous system that also controls common functions such as heart rate and blood pressure, we as humans have no control over this part of our nervous system.

Talk about being helpless… huh?

So you can only treat the symptoms and not the disease in this case, if you get my drift. This is why there is a blast of herbal medications, talcum powders, different oral medications, lotions, and injections of botox to combat the embarrassing odor (the bacterial breakdown of sweat). However, it also requires the person to change his clothes just as you would rush to do the last time you pissed in your pants… thanks to having one too many beers.

Conclusion
Hyperhidrosis is not fatal but can have a strong impact on one’s social, functional and emotional standing. Hence, it bodes well for the rest of us to treat them with dignity and respect and all the more when we should count ourselves fortunate to not inherit an annoying illness such as excessive sweating. And in most cases, that is all we need to do – be cognizant of another’s needs.

A lot of runners have opted for barefoot training for a break from constant injuries. The human foot has been developed without the luxury of padded shoes. The formation of the foot and lower leg is very competent at absorbing the surprise of landing and transferring the energy of the descent into frontward motion, through the coiling act of the foot's natural curve. It is merely by inserting huge quantity of padding beneath the heel that humans are capable to drop on the heel and not the ball of the foot. This way the foot's natural movement is hampered and the curve and lower leg are not capable to soak up the alarm of the landing. In this situation, the shock is propelled up via the heel, to the knees and hips.

Barefoot running entails thrusting from the land with the ball of the foot and not the heel, with the foot landing in a straight line below the hips. It is said that the power to take you onward ought to just be used once the foot is strongly established on the ground. Touching the ground, particularly with the heel, results in trauma and makes the runner at risk to damage. Therefore, running shoes with profoundly padded heels will obstruct this natural movement.

Barefoot Training Benefits

Here are few of the basic advantages of training barefoot:

Assists in integrating a healthier insight of the collision with the ground, which permits us to relate with help more competently, put the body weight on the foot more accurately; boast improved timing of the impact with the ground.

Builds up muscle power, mainly in the clusters of muscles of the feet, and associated muscles of the legs and hips, which are not used when a person is wearing shoes.

Assist to let go of psychological stress by the decrease of electricity charges in the body

Helps to perk up the body temperature rule owing to the adjustment to the lower exterior temperature.

These advantages mean that a runner or any one who exercises barefoot boasts an enhanced organization, insight as well as power.

The best barefoot training surface is grass, and the best would be a golf course. Sand on the beach and artificial track surfaces are also good surfaces for barefoot training.

For a barefoot run, however, there are no particular rules and measures of how to employ barefoot running; earlier than or following your main exercises, or as a major exercises. Whatever manner you choose to integrate barefoot training in your daily exercise routine, you can be sure that with barefoot training you will be earning a lot of advantages. After all, even the Flintstones survived fine without shoes!

Have you ever tried barefoot training?

While us town folk are immersed in judging milk by its packaging, out in the fields the quality of milk is judged quite differently. When a cow is milked, and as the milk settles down, a fat layer of cream forms at the top of the milk. If the layer of cream is thick, then this means that the milk is of superior quality and vice versa. Pasteurized milk is now commonly available throughout the world, as heating the milk obliterates any bacteria in it, in turn making the milk a healthy drink. Pasteurized milk might still, with no trouble, have milk fat proteins divided from the remaining of the milk.

As milk is basically a combination of oil and water, it doesn’t remain homogenous. Thus emerges the concept of homogenized milk. Homogenized milk is manufactured by running it through small tubes, occasionally throughout the pasteurization process in order to keep the fat and liquid molecules as one. Fat molecules are condensed in size and are inclined to scatter more consistently all through the milk which is why the thick layer of cream that comes on top of organic milk doesn’t occur. The homogenization process is also used to decrease overall milk fat in milk. 2% of milk is stripped off a few of the fat molecules to manufacture lower fat milk.

Along with helping to come up with low fat milk, homogenized milk also helps to fight another evil of pasteurized milk. When milk is heated, the white cells and bacteria gather on the base of the milk, forming a bulky and distasteful layer. When milk has been fed via a tiny tube or orifice, this layer at the base merges throughout the milk. Homogenized milk gained popularity in the 1920’s and with good reason too! It has now made milk long lasting which allows for the milk to be shipped greater distances.

However, it has its critics. Some people might look out for the unhomogenized version. While these still may be pasteurized, it still comes in raw milk versions, which can turn out to be dangerous to drink. Yet there are still many people out in the open who drink raw milk without any bad effects. However, there is sporadic bacterial contagion of raw milk that sets up a possible health risk.

You may find the infrequent dairy that manufactures unhomogenized milk, but to keep in mind this ought not to be thought of in the same way as the homogenized liquid. Firstly, you might like to shake it a bit, when you use it to smash up the cream molecules. Secondly, it typically will terminate more speedily, and may be more suitable to soak up horrid flavor from your refrigerator.

Do you or have you ever tried homogenized milk?

Fat loss rate is a tricky subject for many people for many reasons. Of the countless times that you've caught yourself pinching that extra inch of fat thinking it's shrunk to half its size since the last decade, of the many pictures that you brood over during the nights deciding whether you've actually become a tad bit lighter or is it a photographic miracle, how many do you think are mere illusions?

It is a desperate attempt to convince yourself that somehow over the years you are moving towards that dream body. Well maybe you are, but then maybe you aren't. It’s the time to stash the "maybe" in the trash can of illusions and get down to some real change; one that you can actually feel in that pinch and see in your version of "before and after" pictures. Today it's all about making big changes in little time! It's about increasing your fat loss rate to lose 5 pounds in 10 days.

Following a Balanced Diet Plan

When following a weight loss plan the very first step is to work on your eating habits, this does not mean resorting to starvation or fasting, rather there is a need for a balanced diet plan to be formulated. There is truth in the saying ‘you are what you eat’ and healthy eating will make a healthy man out of you. Fast foods, cookies, candies and chocolates are a hazard for the diet program and need to be crossed off the menu. In an attempt to shed rapid weight it is advised to walk the line of a vegetarian, the ingredients of such a green diet contain low fat and high levels of vitamins and calcium. We have devised a sample diet plan that will help you to get rid of some vanity weight and help in maintaining the lean and smart look.

For those of you, who can not function without a cup of coffee in the morning, you'll be glad to know that the contents on our breakfast table include one plain bagel, a cup of coffee with a table spoon of cream.

The breakfast is an essential part of the diet plan as it speeds up the metabolism and such a modest intake of food will be easy to burn through out your daily activities.

To keep you from getting too hungry we have added small snacks between meals, the set of choices for the snacks will be fresh juices or skimmed milk.

The Lunch menu for today has three special low fat items, fish or salad with sugarless dressing and water. Fish serves the purpose of fulfilling you daily requirements of protein and at the same time keeping fat levels to a minimum. Water acts as a detox helping in purifying the body from toxics, wastes and even parasites.

Dinner timings will be scheduled 4-5 hours before sleeping and will have servings of a bowl of cabbage soup, white rice, pulses and of course water.

For this diet plan to be successful the most important attitude you should possess is patience and at the same time be optimistic in believing the fact that this is something good for your body.

The Work Out

Exercise and regular workouts will be the perfect partner to help you sail through the period of 10 days. A combination of two 30 minute work outs during the day with a balanced diet will make you shed those unwanted pounds in no time. The 30 minute work out will consist of cardio exercises, aerobics and a little bit of weight lifting.

If you follow this routine, you are sure to lose more than 5 pounds in 10 days and retain that youthful look. Just make sure that you continue to eat healthy and add a daily exercise routine to maintain your weight, lose more weight and prevent your body from gaining back the weight lost.

Do you have any other tips for increasing your fat loss rate?

Everyone is health conscious nowadays, and why shouldn’t they be? After all, most of the diseases that we hear about are due to eating habits, which is why organic healthy food is becoming even more important. What we eat, more or less determines our fate in a way. Eat healthy food and you’ll prosper, rely on junk food and well we all know what that leads to: obesity, heart diseases and the list is practically endless.

The sad part is that even vegetables and fruits and dairy and meat products do not entirely fit in to the healthy food range. Why? Farming has now become such a mechanized and profit-oriented process and business that reliance on artificial fertilizers is increasing; artificial hormone growth in animals is being practiced for a better yield. The worst part of it all, the animals are not fed a proper diet.

However, all pathways to consuming healthy food are not closed: Organic Food is increasing in popularity and with good reason too. Here is an outline of the great benefits of organic food:

Decreases the quantity of toxic chemicals ingested;

Completely circumvents GMOs [genetically modified organisms];

Decreases the amount of food additives and colorings;

Amplifies the quantity of beneficial vitamins, minerals, EFAs [essential fatty acids] and antioxidants consumed;

Appears to possess the potential to decrease the occurrence of widespread conditions such as cancer, coronary heart disease, allergies and hyperactivity in children.

So what makes organic food a treat for the health and welfare of the individual? It’s primarily due to the presence of nutrients in organic food that are absent in the artificially grown foods:

Chromium is a micronutrient that is not consumed much in our diets, specifically. Its insufficiency is linked with the inception of adult diabetes and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Chromium is higher in quantity in organic foods by an average of 78%.

Selenium is one of the antioxidant nutrients that defend us from injuries caused by environmental chemicals. It is defensive against cancers and heart disease. It is an average of 390% higher in organic foods.

Calcium, required for strong bones, averages 63% high in organics.
Boron, which has been exposed to assist in preventing osteoporosis (along with calcium), averages 70% higher.

Lithium, which is used to cure certain types of depression, was 188% higher.

Magnesium, which lessens mortality from heart attacks, keeps muscles from spasms, and eases the symptoms of PMS, averaged 138% more.

What is your favorite organic healthy food?

Free Range Meat

There is a growing concern among people for consuming and using products and food items that are environmentally friendly. Global warming has definitely stirred up some serious concern among the masses. On the other end, animal treatment has also received a lot of enthusiastic concern, and free range meat is becoming more popular as a result.

While previously, people preferred factory farming over the traditional methods of rearing, the ugly realities of factory farming have received a lot of animosity from the public. Animal upraising has become a business supported by large corporations who are bent on earning profits, with little concern for the well-being of the animal. So where do people turn to for meat that has been produced the natural way and not in a mechanical manner?

What Is Free Range Meat?

The answer to this is “free range”. There is a growing popularity of free range meat, implying that the animals are brought up in the most humane manner possible. They are allowed access to the outside world and are not kept caged in the barns. Animals brought up on the lines of free range are permitted to roam around in the fields with other animals and also receive natural sunlight.

According to the policies of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), it is mandatory for free range animals to have access to outdoor areas; however, the catch is that no specific time frame has been prescribed. The usage of the term “access” here is important. The policy of USDA implies that animals must have “access” to the fields, yet if they are spending time outside or not is not included in the regulations. Therefore, the label of free range can still be used, or rather misused, by corporations even if the animals have not made use of the access provided to them.

Free range meat has a multitude of benefits attached to it. These nutritional benefits make free range meat not only the best diet for those concerned about healthy and natural upbringing of animals but also those on diet plans. Free range meat has a lower amount of fat in total. This implies that free range meat inherently has a lower amount of calories. So if meat comprises of a large section of your regular diet, you can easily control a large portion of the calories by simple switching to free range meat products.

Another added benefit of free range meat is that it has two to four times more Omega-3 fatty acids than factory manufactured meat. So if you’re looking to control your cholesterol level but keep on consuming your favorite meaty products, then free range meat is the option to adopt. Not only that, free range meat has a higher concentration of Vitamin E, the presence of which reduces the risk of cancer and heart diseases.

Look out for free range meat products whenever you go shopping. Not only does it promise that the meat you are eating has come from animals that have not been tortured, but also has immense health benefits.

Have you ever tried free range meat? What are your thoughts?

Proteins are said to have immense benefits for the body, and while there are many different healthy dietary options, a vegan protein diet is one of the most extreme and possibly beneficial.

Let’s see, Protein reduces the amount of bad cholesterol and raises the amount of good cholesterol. Protein reduces the risk of hypertension and keeps the cholesterol level low. Also, studies have shown that those people who have ample intake of protein and less of carbs have fewer chances of having strokes. And even for all those weight fanatics, a protein diet has shown its self capable of shedding off unnecessary fat. So what does a high protein diet basically do?

What happens in a high protein diet is that the amounts of carbs are replaced with protein. As we all know, carbohydrates activate the insulin resulting in more weight gain ultimately. So in a high protein diet, all those sugars, and bread and pasta and potatoes are replaced with protein. Major sources of protein are meat and fish. And seemingly many people seem to be excessively happy with these animal protein forms. But what does a vegetarian do under such circumstances? Worry not, because even the vegetarians can pursue a high protein diet. It’s just about knowing all the protein sources and fitting them in to your diet plan.

Vegan Protein Diet

A large amount of public is shifting towards adopting a vegetarian eating lifestyle due to the concerns and health related issues that have taken birth because of the excessive meat intake. It is a fact that vegetarians have a lower tendency to get inflicted with various chronic maladies. The results of Vegetarian times magazine showed that around 14 million Americans have called themselves vegetarian. While there are various types of vegetarians out on the streets, some of them who might eat fish but not red meat, there is still a much stricter category of vegetarians termed as the Vegan. This post will thus focus on what Vegans should include in their diet to enjoy the benefits of a high protein diet. By the way, going vegan is considered to be very helpful for those suffering from asthma.

Here is an example of a vegan diet high in protein

Breakfast: 1 cup Oatmeal 1 cup Soy milk 1 Bagel

Lunch: 2 slices Whole Wheat Bread 1 cup Vegetarian Baked Beans

Dinner: 5 oz firm Tofu 1 cup cooked Broccoli 1 cup cooked Brown Rice 2 Tbsp Almonds 4

A high protein diet for vegetarians is easily achievable. Nearly all the vegetables, nuts, beans and grains have an ample amount of protein in them. Of course, the trick is to combine these foods in such a manner that the human requirement of having all the 9 amino acids that are present in meat are met by the variations and combinations of all vegan products.

Have you tried or are you currently trying a vegan protein diet? Why or why not?

If you are amongst those who suffer from breathing problems while sleeping then do not take this syndrome as a usual disorder. Many people who suffer from sleep apnea are not aware of it, but there are many sleep apnea treatments available to you. Generally people who have breathing problems while sleeping don't even know that they spend moments at night when they are still and not breathing.

These time slots are termed as 'apnea' and can last for more than 10 seconds throughout the sleeping period. In case you, or someone you know has trouble breathing while sleeping, and along with that suffers from day time fatigue due to lack of proper sleep, then it is most likely that the person is a patient of sleep apnea.

There are two types of sleep apnea conditions:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea: This is characterized by a collapse of the lung, while in a state of slumber, causing a barricade for the flow of air to your lungs.

Central Sleep Apnea: This is characterized by the delay in the brain to signal the body to breathe, and is basically a central nervous disorder that delays the breathing process and causes distortion in breathing.

Sleep Apnea Treatments

There are different approaches that can be adopted to cure sleep apnea. The four different techniques to cure sleep apnea are :

Altering the lifestyle: doctors have observed that people who are obese or over weight are most likely to be suffering from sleep apnea. Therefore it is advised that those suffering from milk sleep apnea and are over weight should work towards shedding off some of those extra pounds. In addition to that, altering the life style to cure sleep apnea also includes surrendering the habit of smoking and alcohol. Sleeping positions should be switched to sleeping on a side rather than on the back and special medicines to keep the nasal pathways open could be taken as well to maintain oxygen flow.

Using a mouthpiece while sleeping: these equipments can be designed by a dentist or an orthodontist and can be used to adjust the tongue and the lower jaw while sleeping so that the airways can be kept open. This method is primarily for those suffering from mild sleep apnea

Making use of breathing devices: for those undergoing a harsher form of sleep apnea, breathing devices are the cure. A continuous positive air pressure machine is one such device that can easily fit over the mouth and the nose and softly pushes air in to the throat. This way the width of the air pathways can be maintained to allow safe flow of air in to the lungs.

Surgery: those who suffer from acute sleep apnea, are advised to undergo this minor surgery of readjustment of the jaw, removing stiffening or shrinking excess tissue or a surgery can be done to remove tonsils that block air pathways too.

This is a condition can easily be overlooked by a lot of people – I'd strongly suggest that if you think you have these symptoms then get yourself checked. Although on the face of it, it seems like a low-risk problem, it is a serious disorder that can impact other aspects of your health and life.

We all deserve a sound sleep!

Do you suffer from this disorder? Do you have any tips or tricks for sleep apnea treatments that you use to help overcome this?
