If you've picked a new career, almost any work environment has its own workspace language. Recently, I started working as an instructional designer (ID) for an e-learning company, considering my prior ID experience in ILTs (instructor-led trainings), getting acclimatized to the 'jargon' took some time.

Yes, it's a field where terms like 'custom builds', 'fixes', 'chunking', 'storyboarding' and so on and so forth are commonplace and is commonly used by those for whom this is a daily part of their lives.

The same is true for other fields that involve engineering, medicine, art and theater and last but not the least, sport.

Take a look at the sport of field or ice hockey or any other sport for that matter, it has its own catchphrases and terms that will take someone who is new to the sport to familiarize themselves with its intricacies.

Tennis

And how about tennis?

No different from the others as well. And my earliest recollection was that of the rivalry of Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker, among other names such as Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and so on and so forth.

There are several tennis terms that one has to be familiar with in order to understand the game of tennis as to how it is played and won in sports competition. The understanding of these terms are both crucial for the players and the spectators so that they can learn tennis.

Tennis Terms

Anyone who has watched a game of tennis will know that it involves games for both males and females in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles formats. Of course, the game is played with racquets and balls specially made for tennis.

The area in which the game is played is called the court with different lines (signifying different areas) for each of the formats. And the spectators sit around the court while watching the players hit the ball back and forth.

So, the game begins with the 'serve' requiring to hit the ball over the net within a designated serving box, and the opponent has to return the ball over the net. If the opponent cannot receive the ball, then a "point" is awarded. There are a few ways to hit the ball namely the forehand, backhand, lob, smash and slice.

If the other person receives the ball, then a "rally" ensues until one person cannot return the ball, and in this case, the person who hit the ball last gets a point.

These points are in the 15-30-40-game where one player is awarded each of these scores once they win a "point". Now if both players are at 40-40 each in a game, it is called a "deuce".

Once a player wins 6 of these games with the other player winning less than five games, then the player who has won 6 games wins a set. In the women's format, the first player to win three sets wins the match while in the men's format the number of set to win a game is five.

And of course, one of the coolest ways of calling the score after a point is won especially when one hasn't scored a point yet is, for example, 40-"love".

In Closing

These are just a few tennis terms that the game uses, and so for the rest, one will have to watch a few matches to understand the game a little better.

Recently I've been visiting a childhood friend (who is an excellent musician) and who has been going through the motions of marriage and bearing children for sometime now.

While I ensure that my weekends involve drinking some beer, playing some music and generally fooling around after taking off that game-face for work throughout the week. Some folks call it winding down, downtime and so on and so forth… and there's never been a week when visiting him is eventless!

Why so?

He has a young son who evidently darts around like a fish screaming 'bloody rage' shooting arrows and brandishing King Arthur's fabled sword, desiring a melee.

One way or another, my presence seems to be like welcome relief for his dad, and of course, one can acknowledge that he's well on his way to be a man's man.

And this perception of ours is based on a simple incident that happened at school. Apparently, the 10th grade students were playing a game of soccer, and this little rascal found it fitting to hose them down with an abundant flow of water which was turned up full blast. Of course, there was one thing we both agreed to… the hose turns out to be quite a handy implement in all sorts of situations! Of course, the little kid's fantasy was to be a fireman of sorts…

The Various Types of Hoses and their Benefits

Speaking of hoses, most of us are familiar with the proverbial fire and garden hose that has become a part of our lives for sometime now, and for very different purposes.

But the bottom line of these hoses are to transport air, water or any other material that can flow from place to another. At another level, pipes are also used for these purpose but they lose out to hoses due their lack of flexibility.

And apart from these conventional types, there exists the dust collection hose that is normally not used for personal purposes but in places that use heavy machinery for industrial machinery such as workshops and so on and so forth.

When fragments of metal, wood and particleboard are released into the air due to these machines, it can turn out to be a health hazard by affecting those who are exposed to it in several ways such respiratory ailments, skin problems, liver or kidney ailments or damage to the eyes. This "dust" can also cause machinery to fail and a dirty work area that is not only unsafe for its workers but slows production down drastically.

And this is where a dust collection system using a dust collection hose acts as a vacuum and collects these fragments, hence, bringing safety levels in the workspace back to acceptable levels.

There are dust collection hoses that are available based on the types of dust needs to be collected such as metal, wood or general dust. So be careful when you wish to purchase one of these hoses for your workspace.

Speaking of which, one can find the appropriate type of dust collection hose over the internet by doing a little Google search or at your nearest hardware store.

In Closing

And one can only imagine what the little rascal would do if he laid his hands on one of these hoses…

Lavender Aromatherapy

There are many things we can do to boost our sense of wellbeing and improve our health, including learning more about the benefits of lavender aromatherapy.

Good health is not just the absence of illness and disease; rather, it is a holistic feeling that encompasses both body and mind and makes you feel at peace with yourself and the world.

While it’s true that drugs and medicines cure diseases and help us get over the symptoms of illness, they also cause various side effects because they’re made of chemicals which are harmful when not taken in the right dosage or when they’re abused and taken unnecessarily.

Also, stress forms a part and parcel of everyone’s lives because of the frantic pace our worlds move at, and this is why complementary wellness methods like aromatherapy are recommended to help you find your inner balance and alleviate stress and tension from your life.

In its simplest form, aromatherapy involves using essential oils to treat emotional and physical conditions. It has the added advantage of being non-invasive, and when used with other relaxation techniques like massages, is soothing and provides relief from the aches and pains of everyday life.

Lavender aromatherapy is especially beneficial because of the naturally healing properties of the lavender plant. Its fragrance is exquisite, and because of its versatility in treating a variety of ills and conditions, lavender is recommended if you’re looking to try aromatherapy for the first time.

Advantages of Lavender Aromatherapy

While the benefits may vary from person to person, in general lavender aromatherapy offers the following advantages:

It prevents and helps you deal with depression and feelings of sadness and despair.

It helps get rid of fatigue.

It relaxes both your mind and body.

It sooths aching muscles, joints and limbs.

It helps reduce negative emotions like anger and stress and lulls you into a state of peace.

It helps soothe you and promotes sound and rejuvenating sleep.

It is even used to soothe sunburns and other kinds of skin irritations.

It is a good antiseptic in cleaning cuts.

Besides using lavender oil in aromatherapy, you could also mix a few drops in carrier oils to use for a massage; a few drops on a tissue placed in your room creates a soothing aroma that helps you relax and sleep better.

It is also used in baths and in potpourris to enhance your overall feeling of wellness and happiness.

If you’ve never experienced the benefits of lavender aromatherapy, now is a good time to begin – it is bound to improve your life in more ways than one.

Ever since L. Ron Hubbard criticized the field of "psychology" that was primarily contributed to by Germans, resulting in Scientology not necessarily making itself a popular religion (if one can even call it that). Apparently, these Germans are 'evil' and all that jazz.

However, even if this were true, the Germans have not only contributed to the field of psychology but in almost every field of science and technology. One wonders whether we must ignore research and development made in all these fields as well, and return to the Dark Ages!

Strangely enough, one of these discoveries led to the term 'zeitgeber' which was coined by a German biologist Jürgen Aschoff in 1954 while studying the phenomenon of the 'circadian rhythm' that has been in existence among all living things since the beginning of time.

Zeitgeber

By itself, the term 'circadian rhythm' (circadian means 'approximately one day) is in reference to a rough 24-hour cycle in the behavioral, biochemical and physiological processes of living things, that is an important point of reference in the discipline of chronobiology.

The bottom line of this study is that all living things such as plants, animals, fungi and cyanobacteria all have an internal clock (or according to these scientists, it is an endogenous process) that governs their sleeping and waking patterns.

Even though this process is an internal one, the cues by which one wakes up or goes to sleep is an external one, and this external factor that is a part of our environment has been defined as a 'zeitgeber'. (timegiver or synchronizer in English)

And perhaps you might have noticed that almost every living being follows a sleep-waking cycle, and without sleep, one would not be able to function properly, and too much sleep gives you headaches or leaves you feeling groggy.

Just to make sure that one does not remain in sleep forever and a day, or does not go to sleep at all, as both cause health issues, these external cues are sounds or sights that effect our everyday life.

Examples of Zeitgeber

One of the most common example of a zeitgeber is the light that comes through our windows early in the morning which wakes us up while causing us to sleep when the sun goes down. This process where our internal system synchronizes with the external factor of night and day is known as entrainment.

Experts say that the best examples of zeitgebers are naturally occurring phenomenon such as a crowing of a rooster in the morning, which works as a cue to wake the person up.

There are other types of zeitgebers are social interactions, drinking, using medication and taking drugs which adjust the body's rhythms so that they respond to these events based on their consistent occurrences in the past.

In Closing

Come to think of it, I always think of having a beer when it rains, while for friends of mine, sex seems to come to mind. As strange as that seems, one can find this concept of a zeitgeber in almost every sphere of our lives.

Oh yes, and this has nothing to do with psychology and mad scientists sitting in a lab somewhere waiting to take someone's mind apart!

Introduction

For those who live an active life and believe in the unrealistic paradigm of "I'll sleep when I'm dead" (Bon Jovi style), it's time to "wake up" and smell the coffee. Kudos to you if you have so much to do that you can't clock in about seven to eight hours that will eventually lead to a breakdown slowly and surely!

The bottom line is that getting in a good night's sleep is vital to anyone who would like to motor on with their daily activity. After all, every living organism needs to rest, and we're no human… no matter what developments in science manages to conjure in the near future.

However, there's another angle to this: the posture with which one sleeps is also just as important. And for most of you who have had one of those 'wild nights' and wondered why you woke the next morning not knowing why you have that pain in your neck or your back and to the extent of muscle cramps and strains will probably have figured that by now.

Introduction to Sleeping Postures

There are several postures that one usually sleeps in. Not all of them are good for your spinal cord because the posture that you sleep in affects the this part of the body most.

Since the spinal cord in our body is straight, it is therefore not a good idea to sleep in postures that are curved but straight… or else all sorts of issues will crop up due to the misaligned spinal cord which can be attributed to the strain placed on the back due to these faulty postures.

Types of Sleeping Postures

Now there are three types of postures that anyone is used to sleeping in (not unless you're up to to crazy nocturnal stuff that some folks do):

1) On your stomach

2) On your back

3) On your sides

For those who are used to (1) would also notice that their stiffness and pain of the neck is often involved, and the ideal position of sleeping with a straight back is not achieved as well.

If you can't stop sleeping this way, it is often suggested that one places the pillow under one's stomach instead of the neck so as to relieve the pressure on the back and the neck while increases the chances of damaging you nervous system and the spine as the head is turned in extreme rotation putting it extension, thus stopping the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain. This is apparently the worst posture to sleep in, according to chiropractors and those in the medical community.

However, for those who are used to either (2) or (3), it is disputed that some either of these positions serve the purpose of keeping one's spine straight which of course, depends on a few factors.

Tips for sleeping in the right posture(s)

1) On your back

Keep your neck supported while also keeping your knees elevated as well using an old pillow.

2) On your sides

There should be enough pillow between your ear and the bed so that your head isn't forced in any particular direction. Also remember to place an old pillow between your knees which will prevent one from twisting their pelvis which is not good.

In Closing

And it would be useless for me to even bring up how lousy it is for one to sleep in a seated position.

Recently, I read an article which spoke about the Brassica family consisting of turnips, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage and good old broccoli. What it said was that three little compounds found in any vegetable of this family has immune boosting and anti-cancer properties.

Yes, of course. It's old news (thanks to the folks but until now everyone just knew that veggies were good for you. And why? Because Mom (or grandmom) said so.

And where did they get this information from?

Who knows? But as it turns out, according to the research by scientists, your mom, grandmom, aunt, (and wherever she got this nugget of information from) was apparently spot on! And we needed them to tell us that…

Speaking of wisdom emanating from home… er… also known as home remedies, there is a nice little remedy that one can use to remove earwax but first, let's look at what earwax is, before getting to the home remedy.

Ear Wax

It's that yellowish waxy substance that you can't wait to get rid of (for the women) or can't be bother to remove for decades (for the men). Medically, it is called 'cerumen' and is the by-product of alcohols, cholesterol, squalene, long chain fatty acids and keratin (skin protein).

As delightful as this sounds, the thing is that the production of earwax is a result of the body's metabolic processes and which is responsible in ear canal protection, cleaning and lubrication.

So, for all of you who think that its yucky and all that, it actually has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties preventing ear infections and in its absence, one can have dry and itchy ears to deal with.

However, as with all things in excess, and even though earwax acts as the ear's natural defense system, too much of earwax prevents one from hearing too well. (Well, now you know why men don't listen!)

Removing Earwax

In this case where there is an excess accumulation of earwax, quite a few people are of the opinion that hydrogen peroxide is a good way to remove the earwax.

And here's how one can go about it (but do read the Precautions List if you're trying this immediately rather than going Oops!):

Materials Required: Hydrogen Peroxide (3 percent), cotton balls, eye dropper, olive or almond oil, a bulb aspirator (normally used for babies who haven't yet learned to pick their nose yet) and preferably a spotter (nurse, mom, sister, wife or girlfriend – OK, strike off the last one!)

Step One: Keep the hydrogen peroxide and the almond/ olive oil in a bowl of warm water so its temperatures increase as well, and which the dissolution of the earwax.

Step Two: Tilt your ear to add the heated oil and hydrogen peroxide with the ear that is to be treated facing the ceiling.

Step Three: Use the eye dropper to add 2-3 drops of oil. Wait for 2-3 minutes.

Step Four: Add 2-3 drops of warm hydrogen peroxide in the same manner.

Step Five: Stay in the same position until the hydrogen peroxide stops bubbling. You can place a towel on your shoulder to absorb any kind of spillage.

Step Six: In the instance of impacted earwax, one will have to repeat Step one to five repeatedly.

Step Seven: Now, comes the draining process. Fill the bulb aspirator with warm water and tilt your ear over the sink. Position the bulb aspirator at about 45 degrees to the ear and squirt water into the ear, which will remove and loosen any remaining earwax. Let it drain out after that… and you can do this 2-3 times.

And we're done!

Precautions in Removing Earwax

There are some folks who should not follow the aforementioned procedure such as those who:

a) suffer from ear pain

b) have hearing impairment

c) have sensitive skin.

And if you have ear blockage symptoms, consult a professional physician immediately before trying this procedure.

In Closing

So, girls, clean your man's ears… maybe that's the problem! It's probably that or as always it's just that he's just preoccupied with nothing!

A friend's friend owns a tattoo parlor, and with the weird suggestions that hit him everyday, he fully admit that life is indeed full of surprises. Now with folks who tattoo the American stars and stripes on their body, that is cool… but when one of my fellow countrymen decided to mark his biceps with the "Ashoka Chakra", which is emblem of our nation… it was pretty obvious that things has crossed a line from cool to the bizarre.

Somehow common sense prevailed, and he was convinced to turn that image into a more acceptable 'tiger' as the marks from the prior tattoo would fall in line with this one!

Anyways, as slick as all this is, one must remember that the tattoo ink used is permanent, although, you can find those girlie/ kiddy tattoos that are temporary ones, and which defeat the purpose of getting a tattoo in the first place.

The Rise and Fall of Tattooing

Tattooing has been around for ages. The aborigines in different parts of the world from Polynesia to Africa and to Europe wore tattoos, and was considered normal.

With the advent of Christianity, these aborigines were converted to Western beliefs and their way of life, and thus the practice of tattooing which was considered a taboo according to most Westerners at the time, began to fade away after centuries and centuries of tradition.

Ironically, it was Janis Joplin with tattoos of a wristlet and a small heart of her left breast who staged a renaissance of sorts in order to restore the art of tattoing to its former glory.

Tattoos of today

Although, tattooing has taken a few decades (and now the world has one more thing to thank Joplin for!) to take the world by storm, it has never looked back… with almost every conceivable color on God's green earth being put to use.

These tattoos, can be made of any shape and size, as long as it means something to the person, however, there are boundaries (in the aforementioned example) that one does not cross. Coolness has everything to do with it, of course…

Personally speaking, I find these tribal tattoos real slick but can live to see others riddled with butterflies, hearts, barbed wire and other conventional tattoos that are out in full force today.

Tattoo Ink

Now when it comes to the process involved in getting a tattoo, the ink used in early times were directly sourced from nature along with the hazards involved but in today's world, things have changed alright.

The selection one has in colors and shades are remarkable as there are several dyes and pigments used these days that range from inorganic compounds such as titanium dioxide and iron oxide to carbon black among several other compounds such as azo dyes and dyes made from ash.

Since most tattoo artists mix their own pigments with a carrier (while ensuring that all safety precaution are maintained, without a doubt, there is no tattoo ink that can be regarded as the best.

In Closing

As for me, getting a tattoo is not necessarily is a problem, but what I'm waiting for is that perfect symbol that describes me and that will never change even when I'm 75… and as for the 'emblem of our nation', it is indeed where it should be and not on the body of an overzealous tattoo freak.

Recently, we went out out and purchased some indoor plants since my mother likes gardening. It's such a fascinating trip and by this I mean, the fabulous idea of having plants around the house.

Not only does the place look better but you build your own little 'oxygen tent', thanks to the process of photosynthesis that releases oxygen as a by-product.

And with pollution taking its toll on those who frequent the highways and streets of whichever city in the world you live in, a few plants at home never hurts.

The bottom line being that all plants purify the air but there are a few indoor plants that work best when it comes to relieving its immediate environment of carbon-dioxide among other toxins and pollutants that we can unaware of.

The Purification of Air

Apart from just carbon-dioxide that we exhale on a daily basis, there are several toxins and pollutants that are present due to the stuff we have at home.

Some of these items include printing inks, lacquers, varnishes, paints and adhesives which contain trichloroethylene while formaldehyde is virtually present in almost every home in the form of urea-formaldehyde, foam insulation, particle board or pressed wood products, as well as consumer paper products such as grocery bags, waxed paper, facial tissue and paper towel some of which are treated with formaldehyde resins.

Finally, benzene is also commonly found in homes everywhere in items such as oils, inks, gasoline, paint, plastic, rubber while also being used in the manufacture of dyes, detergents, pharmaceuticals and synthetic fibers.

Remember that all this information wasn't even known until NASA came up with a study to determine the best indoor plants to have around the house in order to remove pollutants and toxins that might be present without our knowledge.

The 1989 NASA Study & the "sick building syndrome"

Along with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA), NASA conducted a study that lasted 2 years and whose findings clearly wanted to use indoor plants as a way to combat the "SICK BUILDING SYNDROME".

In fact, these indoor plants were found to be so effective in absorbing contaminants that they planned to take some of these plants into outer space as biological life support systems for orbiting space stations.

The Top Ten Indoor Plants For Air Purification

So here are the top ten indoor plants that are most effective when it comes to clearing the air from pollutants and toxins:

1. Peace Lily – Spathiphyllum

2. Marginata – Dracaena Marginata

3. Mass cane/Corn Plant – Dracaena Massangeana

4. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue Sansevieria Laurentii

5. Pot Mum – Chrysantheium morifolium

6. Warneckii – Dracaena “Warneckii”

7. Janet Craig – Dracaena “Janet Craig”

8. Chinese Evergreen – Aglaonema Modestum

9. Bamboo Palm – Chamaedorea Seifritzii

10. English Ivy Hedera Helix

11. Gerbera Daisy Gerbera Jamesonii

In Closing

What came to my attention is the year when the study was released, and since then not many substantial studies have been conducted but hey, if you did pay attention to your biology lessons, you'd know that this information is probably enough to get you your own set of indoor plants (based on these recommendations!) if the aesthetic reasons aren't enough.

What piques my interest is how these plants looked when they were floating around in zero gravity… or was it the case of the 'space pen'?

Food. It's one thing that people cannot do without. Strangely enough, binging and purging are activities that the species of humans are accustomed to, at the height of their superiority on Planet Earth, so to speak.

Balance is key in an effort to maintain one's fitness with extremes (at either end!) not being acceptable. Look at these anorexic types as well as those who live in denial by eating everything in sight and expecting everyone to just love them while they hold to these habits that shorten the duration of their lifespan.

The expectation, by itself, is unrealistic and is along the lines of Mark Twain's "If I had a drinking problem, I'd drink all the time".

The rest of the species on Earth don't seem to have this problem, and know exactly when to stop when they've had enough. After too much of anything no matter how good it is will be a bad thing.

In the case of plants, the way they make food is by the process of photosynthesis, and it should be noted that on the cessation of this natural process, all life on this earth can begin to count the number of days they will survive.

And the reason for this: the release of oxygen that is vital to the lives of every living creature on this planet, including us all-knowing humans as well.

Photosynthesis

If you've had the pleasure to fill your house with plants like some of us have had, the bottom line for plants to make food is the availability of sunlight and water. Period.

And since they're not necessarily mobile, they are dependent on other agents in nature to help them in sourcing these vital requirements for their survival and growth.

From the chemical reaction perspective of photosynthesis, what goes in (absorbed by the plants) is CO2 and water and what comes out is oxygen (a by-product) while the simple sugars are used for food.

And this is done by harnessing the light energy of the sun, which works to convert the carbon-dioxide into simple sugars. The light-grabbing business is taken care of by the pigment known as chlorophyll while the roots of the plants ensures that it absorbs minerals and water (not unless you get off your a** and water those plants yourself), thus bringing both necessary ingredients together in order to begin the first stage of photosynthesis known as the light-dependent reactions.

In a process known as carbon fixation, the carbon-dioxide absorbed is converted into sugar like glucose and by storing them in molecules known as ATP and NADPH.

In the second stage of photosynthesis that does not depend on the presence of light, these products are captured and carbon-dioxide which is captured from the atmosphere is reduced to ultimately form sucrose and starch.

In Closing

In danger of sounding repetitive, this unique yet universal process is what most lifeforms depend on, as the release of oxygen is vital to the survival of all of mankind. So, get busy and plant a tree or at least save trees from being cut down. It isn't something that we can afford to take lightly…

While watching this documentary on the life of early man (thanks to my cousin who wanted some information for a school project), it was interesting to note that people during these times were of the nomadic types and had not yet even begun to 'settle down' literally speaking.

Of course, the next age was the time when they began to do so and this was the period in which man began to try his luck at farming which meant that the possibility of settling down and making homes for themselves were also a reality as opposed to moving from one place to another, which some people consider to be parasitic in nature.

Yes, we live in an age now when all that was unthinkable, thanks to the 'age of reason' which was a time when man began to think for himself as opposed to just believing. Science and technology has changed our lives in a way that people from those days can only dare to imagine in their wildest dreams.

For example, people would not even be able to understand how plants grow at time, and since we're not in the neolithic age anymore, this knowledge is imparted to students in elementary school.

How plants grow

The biggest between plants and the rest of the living species on this planet is that they cannot move, and so the dependence on the other elements of nature to do the work for them is a factor that cannot be overlooked.

Very simply, an animal can move around and get food to eat (and thus grow) while plants cannot, and so they have to depend on sunlight and water and use them in separate processes known as photosynthesis and respiration in order to help them grow.

And just like all creatures require food to grow, plants have to use the process of photosynthesis to be able to produce food (namely sugars) for their sustenance. In short, the leaves of most plants combine CO2, light energy and water to make these sugars with no other part of the plant participating in this activity.

The process of photosynthesis is so important for our planet that if it ceased to exist, one could consider Earth ceasing to exist as well. We humans, are but a small species, on a large planet.

Truth be told, with the food mostly stored in the form of sugars, the plant gets all it needs to grow from here on, and while this process is an ongoing one, that is why that little seed you planted in your garden will grow into a seedling and then into a shrub and in a few years time, a tree.

From the aspect of humans, with the process of the absorption of carbon-di-oxide and the release of oxygen as a waste product by plants, you can imagine why biologists insist on planting more trees everywhere while lamenting on the depletion of forest everywhere. Yes, the ecological balance is at stake here, and it is time to pay attention to that.

In Closing

The cycles of birth and death occur everywhere but since our delicate ecosystem is symbiotic in nature, the growing importance of keeping every species of herbs and plants alive is vital to our survival as well.
