Introduction

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work for a day in your life. Yes, this was what Confucius said from so long ago. Strangely enough, it is applicable to our lives even today. And why?

Because human beings since then until now, have aspirations. They aspire to be somebody if not like somebody they admire. For it is in our hopes and dreams that we find who we are being the seat of all desire… the desire to live fully based on what drives us – what defines us.

Perhaps this is the only difference between a career and a job.

The bottom line though is the motivation behind your aspirations, and the biggest indicator of whether your deepest held dreams will stand the test of time and talent or not.

For some of us, our choice of profession might be in the arts, science, medicine or technology but the ones that many of us can draw inspiration from, are careers in teaching and medicine. And by no means do these career choices pay any lesser than careers in other industries.

One vital career in the field of medicine is that of a nutritionist and one that is growing in demand for the lack of qualified personnel in a country that is obsessed with health and fitness.

The Role of the Nutritionist

The profession of Nutrition (as opposed to Dietetics) is "the study of nutrients in food, how nutrients are used in the body and the relationship between diet, health and disease".

So, nutritionists (and dietitians) plan food & nutrition programs, supervise the preparation of meals as well as oversee the serving of meals. However, the nutritionist's role only caters to people who are healthy and would like to improve their health further whereas the dietitian caters to people who are ill as well.

It's common knowledge that the profession of a 'nutritionist' has been given a 'bad rap' in hallowed circles, as the levels of education vary from minimal to nothing among its practitioners. So the best way to progress in this field is to acquire a four year bachelor's degree that several universities provide courses for, to become a registered dietitian.

Once you complete your education, you receive the certification of a 'registered dietitian', and then you can work your way up in this field in roles such as:

1) Clinical dietitians – who work at hospitals, nursing care facilities and other such institutes.

2) Community dietitians – which involves counseling groups and individuals on nutritional practices that promote health or prevent disease.

3) Management dietitians – who supervise large-scale meal planning and preparation in healthcare facilities, prisons, schools and cafeterias.

4) Consultant dietitians – either working with a healthcare facility under a contract or practicing privately.

Since there is a growing demand for qualified nutritionists, the salaries that they receive are just as good as any graduate with a certain amount of experience.

The Salary of a Nutritionist

Much like most careers, these salaries vary by experience, education and by geographic region. According to a report in the year 2007, here are median salaries for registered dietitians:

1) Consultation and Business – $60,008

2) Food and nutrition management – $64,002

3) Nutrition education and research – $66,061

4) Clinical nutrition/ambulatory care – $52,000

5) Clinical nutrition/long-term care – $53,997

6) Community nutrition – $48,006

7) Clinical nutrition/acute care – $48,984

In Closing

When you come to think of it, choosing the field of nutrition and dietetics is not such a bad idea when you compare it to the yearly income of doctorate-holders which average out to almost $70,000 to $80,000 a year. Not only is it inspiring work that seeks to better the health of the people you help but it pays pretty well too.

You've got a little over three weeks to impress the important people in your life, so don't resort to a Christmas-eve, last-minute, gas-station pickup. Slim Jim's and lottery tickets anyone?

With all the recent controversy surrounding NFL player concussions, topped off by the devastating neck injury to Kevin Everett, comes a new line of Riddell football helmets. But, is your head worth $1000?

Yes? Then you'll want the new high-tech, concussion-sensing, skull encapsulator (helmet sounds so primitive). This innovative football helmet can monitor the precise location and severity of a hit to the player wearing it.

Eight college football teams are already using the new Riddell football helmets. Every time a player takes a hit, the helmet uses sensors, similar to those used in airbags, to register the impact, then wirelessly send the data to a computer on the sideline (sounds like something out of the New England Patriots' SpyGate scandal).

If the computer determines that a certain player has received enough damage to potentially cause brain injury, it sends an alert to the coach or team trainer instantly.

The consumer versions will work in a similar way, but they need to be hooked up to a computer after the game to upload the data. Once uploaded, even family members will be able to access the impact results to see just how hard little Johnny got hit in the third quarter.

At first glance, $1000 seems outrageous for Riddell football helmets, but marketing chief Jim Heidenreich makes a great point:

"If people buy $1,000 drivers and $500 baseball bats, we hope they'll spend that kind of money on head protection."

Would you spend $1000 on a helmet for yourself or your children?

The mayor of the northwestern Italian city announced this week that women will be paid $70 for losing 7 pounds, and men must drop 9 pounds to score the same payday.

[Infomercial voice]: "But wait! There's more! If you keep the weight off for 5 months, you rake in another $280!"

Has the phrase, "Put your money where your mouth is!" ever been more appropriate? (How many calories are in a $100 bill?)

“Lots of people are saying, ‘I really need to lose some weight but it’s really tough.’ So I thought, why don’t we go on a group diet?” says Mayor Gianluca Buonanno.

Several people in the town of 7,500 have already signed up.

Seems like a great idea to implement here in America; we're fat, and we love money.

Would you drop 7-9 pounds and keep it off for 5 months for $350?

You've probably already heard last week's story about PepsiCo, Inc. admitting that Aquafina is nothing more than tap water in a bottle and shiny packaging. They will now be including the words "Public Water Source" on all of their labels (seems like their marketing department could come up with a phrase a little less "sewer-like"). Keep in mind, however, they aren't just dipping the bottles in the nearest toilet until they're full. Though the water comes from public reservoirs, it does go through quality control and filtration systems.

Now, I never thought that bottled water was gathered up by some magical fairy and was untouched by human hands and/or nature's elements — although brands like Danone's Evian or Nestle's Poland Spring claim their so-called "spring waters" are shipped from specific locations they say have notably cleaner water. So, I wasn't very surprised and didn't feel duped by the fact that bottled water isn't going to give me superpowers.

But, the whole story, along with bottled water's fierce critics — yes, there are actually people devoting their entire lives to bringing down the evil bottled water industry, such as the "Think Outside the Bottle" campaign — got me thinking about my own water-drinking habits.

I drink ten 16-ounce bottles of Deer Park water everyday. Not almost everyday, not sometimes 9 and sometimes 11. Like a human robot, I set aside 10 bottles every morning and make sure they are all empty by the time my head hits the pillow that night.

So, out of curiosity, I did a quick calculation of how much money I spend per month on water. Shockingly, I discovered I'm flushing (quite literally) over $60 per month down the toilet. Now, that certainly isn't going to break anyone's bank, but just the principle of paying an amount like that for the planet's most available resource got me thinking of some alternatives.

After some research on the best filter brand, I bought a Pur 2 Stage Water Dispenser and will be testing it out this month. I'm on the go a lot, so I still want the convenience of a bottle, but I will be refilling my bottles every morning using the filtered water from the Pur Dispenser. According to my calculations, even with the amount of water I drink, I will only need to replace the filter once per month (most people would probably only need to change it every two). Each filter costs less than $10, effectively saving me over $50 a month, not to mention not having to lug 5 cases of water to the car every time I hit the grocery store.

I will be getting the same clean, filtered water through my faucet at home that Aquafina — and probably several other brands — is selling their customers. If filtered tap water is good enough for a giant conglomerate like Pepsi, it's good enough for me!

Do you drink bottled water? If so, what brand?

(Stock Market Stats from June 24, 2007)

Everyone thinks they can time the stock market. They see Jim Cramer jumping and screaming on TV and think, "If he can do it, then why can't I?". Unfortunately, Mr. Cramer, along with just about every other stock market analyst, is usually wrong as much as he is right. That's just the nature of the beast that is the stock market. Both bears and bulls are pretty scary and unpredictable animals.

However, one of the few trends that tends to stick to the script is the proverbial "summer slump". This is when the stock market seems to do as we do: kick back, take a small vacation, and rest up a bit before launching into the hectic holiday season later in the year. Here's the statistics from last week to prove the slump may be starting very soon:

Dow: 13,360 -2.1%

Nasdaq: 2,589 -1.5%

Nasdaq 100: 1,922 -1.0%

S&P 500: 1,503 -2.0%

S&P Midcap 400: 896 -1.8%

S&P Smallcap 600: 433 -1.6%

Now, those aren't catastrophic losses by any means, but a clean sweep of negative percentages across the board is enough to pay closer attention in the coming weeks. Obviously, the best time to start a position or add to an existing one is when stock prices are at their lowest, and the summer slump usually provides a good entry point for most.

Stay tuned here next week to see if the trend continues, and keep an eye on it yourself. If prices do drop a few more percentage points, it could be a great time to add to some of your positions.

Your only option used to be to call "411" and pay the fee for someone else to look the number up for you. Now, this may be small change to some of you, but to the penny-pinchers and budgeting students, Google has done it again.

Google now has their own 411 service that you can call for free, plus they will automatically dial the number and connect you for free as well. The number and further information is below. I tried it out today and asked for "American Family Fitness". They connected me, and I was talking to the AmFam front desk guy in seconds. Try it out for yourself today, and see if it works as well in your area:

Welcome to Google Voice Local Search

Google Voice Local Search is Google’s experimental service to make local-business search accessible over the phone.

To try this service, just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone.

Using this service, you can:

search for a local business by name or category.
You can say "Giovanni's Pizzeria" or just "pizza".

get connected to the business, free of charge.

get the details by SMS if you’re using a mobile phone.
Just say "text message".

And it's free. Google doesn’t charge you a thing for the call or for connecting you to the business. Regular phone charges may apply, based on your telephone service provider.

Note: Google Voice Local Search is still in its experimental stage. It may not be available at all times and may not work for all users. We’re fine-tuning the service to get better at recognizing your requests. It’s currently only available in English, in the US, for US business listings.

If you're always worrying about money, then it will be near impossible to achieve "total mind and body fitness", which as you know, is what we are all about here at FitBuff.com.

You know how your cable and/or phone bills seem to come about 31 times a month, instead of just once? Every time you open the mail there's a $100 Comcast bill (or insert your cable company) and a $60 Verizon bill (or insert your carrier). Well, unfortunately, Comcast and Verizon, along with all of their brother and sister companies, aren't really concerned about your financial woes. They just want you to keep paying for their modern "essential" services, and if you don't, then you will be missing the latest episode of Lost and have no phone service to call anyone to find out what happened!

To keep that awful tragedy from occurring, I have devised a plan to take care of these bills, without having to bring in "Joey the Shady Cable 'Repair' Man" to rig your system. I'll confess, my method isn't actually "free" per se (you should have guessed after seeing "legally" in the title), but I promise it will feel almost as painless.

What You Will Need:
1. A credit/debit card (you can do the same thing with cash, but it's more cumbersome, and plus it's 2007, get with the plastic old-timer)
2. An online banking account (if you don't already have one, chances are that your bank offers one for free)

I got the idea after seeing a Bank of America commercial for a new credit card called "Keep the Change". What it does is every time you make a purchase with the card, it automatically rounds up to the nearest dollar and transfers the remaining change into your savings account. For example, if you buy a magazine (a health and fitness magazine right? not the ones in the plastic bag) for $5.62, then the card would charge the $5.62 to your checking account and then transfer $0.38 to your savings account. Doesn't sound like much, but trust me, you'd be amazed how fast it adds up. I thought this was an excellent idea and feature, but if you're like me, it's not enough to start cancelling and reapplying for new credit cards. So instead, I integrated the same strategy into a method of my own that I can use with my current card.

I go through my entire day as I normally would, making nearly all my purchases with my debit card. I rarely use cash at all, and my debit card withdraws the money directly from my checking account. I have my checking account and savings account both set up for online banking. So, at the end of the day, while I'm going through emails, etc. before bed, I quickly login to my online bank account, round down to the nearest $10, and transfer that amount to my savings account. For example, if I've gone through the day, and when I get home I have $708.37 in my checking account, I transfer $8.37 into my savings account. If there is less than a $5 increment, like $702.89, I usually round all the way down to $690.00 and transfer $12.89. Obviously, you can adjust these numbers and what you round down to based on your budget and spending habits. You may want to only round down to the nearest $5 or all the way to the nearest $20.

Either way, it's a way to transfer small amounts of money that you will never even miss on a regular basis. At the end of the month, I usually have about $100-$250 that I have transferred using this method. That's money that I never missed or even realized was gone. If you are still using cash for the majority of your purchases, you could still incorporate this idea into the old-fashioned piggy bank method, but this is primarily for the emerging tech-savvy "plastic-only" online bankers. It's so much faster, more convenient, and safer over here – come over to our side!
