The weight you gained may have been from water. Carbs absorb lots of water and to lose water weight many fighters simply stop eating carbs before a fight. The apples you ate could have made you gain weight from this. They also contain lots of fiber which tends to absorb a lot of water. The fiber and water (and gas from the fiber) could also make your stomach and mid-section appear bigger and more bloated. The fat in the almonds you ate is one of the healthiest fats you can eat and with the exception of cold water fish probably is THE healthiest fat there is. More than 95% of every other fat will make you gain weight.
Your experiment makes sense and I definitely believe you but I'd consider it more of an exception or a loophole then proof that fruit makes you fat and fat doesn't. I would also suggest more experiments before stating something so bold. (Though I do admire the fact that you tested this out) Also you should be careful what you proclaim on the internet because there's a lot of people in this country waiting to see the words 'fruit makes you fat' so they can go back to eating chips and soda.

You will never get fat from fruit but if you overdo it you will know it as you are likely to get the runs as fruit in large amounts is laxative.

I think you'll find the Avocado has the most fat but you're onto a good thing, if you're on a diet, the mixture of fruit & veg will be supplying your body with lots of nutrients it needs.

I'd suggest always keeping a travel pack of various low fat fruits and nuts so that you're not tempted to fall off the diet waggon when passing a fast food outlet.

I love grapefruit myself, I peel them and eat them like oranges.

Interesting theory... I have also heard fruit is not what you want to eat if you are trying to cut fat... But, I would rather have the health benefits of fruit. I think if you have the right mix you can still be cut and eat fruit, veggies, carbs, lean meats, fats, etc..

Interesting, however, what if you lowered your fat intake while you increased your carb intake? Do you think the combination of carbs and fat was the culprit?

Fascinating blog post. That's pretty awesome that you can conduct such precise research on yourself. So what's your next challenge?

2lbs over the course of the week with an acute increase in carbs that reverses on a low carb diet? I'm willing to bet this was due to water retention, explaining the discrepancy in body fat. . Nice experiment though.

As I read this, I am putting down my half-eaten apple. I have always had this suspicion too, that fruit didn't work for me (although I love it) in terms of weight loss.
