The Douglas Adams quote is interesting: "Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so." The problem is that experiences aren't real until they are actually experienced. In other words, people learn best by experience.

Good point MD, and I certainly can't speak for Confucius, but one way of interpreting the meaning behind it is to aim high and choose your friends wisely, rather than getting mixed up with the "bad crowd."
