Friday's Fitness Quotes: "Where all think alike…"

Stand Up and Stand Out
"Where all think alike, no one thinks very much."
- Walter Lippmann
My equally brilliant interpretation and application to the fitness world: You may have a favorite fitness guru, writer, or blogger (ahem!), but you should never trust one single person on every single health-related issue.
Even the most esteemed experts get one wrong every now and then, when new research comes along and completely debunks what they so steadfastly believed.
That's just the nature of the beast. Things are always changing — usually quite rapidly — and different suggestions, whether related to weightlifting or cardio or nutrition, can produce completely different results for different people.
Try it before you buy it, and find out what works for you!
Monitor and Mix
"However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results."
- Sir Winston Churchill
My equally brilliant interpretation and application to the fitness world: So, you've started your brand new trendy fashion diet of the month, and you're following it to the letter.
Or, you're looking for someone to tell you exactly how many reps of exactly how many upper body exercises you should do every second Sunday on a full blue moon.
Much in the same vein as the above quote, don't get caught in the trap of blindly following a routine, without…drumroll…paying attention to the results!
It's so easy to get programmed into doing what you're used to, but this isn't a coloring book. You can veer outside the lines and make the big picture look even better (how nauseatingly poetic).
Live It Up, But Don't Eat It Up
"Better fare hard with good men than feast it with bad."
- Thomas Paine
My equally brilliant interpretation and application to the fitness world: Are you in the habit of kickin' it with the fellas every weekend, while gorging on pizza, beer, and nachos?
Or maybe you stop off a few nights a week to enjoy a few calorie-filled drinks with coworkers?
While some drill sergeants would tell you to get new friends, why don't you just practice the lost art of self-control.
Even better, get "new" friends by encouraging your current buds to drop the Bud's and challenge each other to get in shape.
Let the FutherMucker Burn!
"If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise."
- Robert Fritz
My equally brilliant interpretation and application to the fitness world: This reminds me of a similar quote I really like, slightly paraphrased: "There's never been a backup plan that wasn't eventually fallen back on."
In other words, this concept is the anti-"burn no bridges." There's something very primal and Spartan about the thought of do or die.
When you decide, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you will achieve a specific goal you've set for yourself, you will — every time!
Behind Door #3…
"There are two kinds of men who never amount to much: those who cannot do what they are told and those who can do nothing else."
- Cyrus H. Curtis
My equally brilliant interpretation and application to the fitness world: Be the third kind of man: the man who can do as he's told when necessary, but has the knowledge and power to do what no one else can.
