
When it comes to health and nutrition supplements, manufacturers tend to err on the side of, "it can't hurt," rather than, "this really works." So seems to be the case with Glutamine.
Glutamine does indeed play an important role in helping your body recover from and fuel your workouts, but it's a non-essential amino acid (meaning your body produces its own supply), and there's no consistent evidence that additional supplementation provides any greater benefits.
"Unfortunately, this appears to be another example of commercial marketing trumping scientific evidence that in this case demonstrates how nonessential glutamine supplementation is to athletic performance," says Dr. George C. Phillips of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital
Undoubtedly, this research review will spur even more studies into the effectiveness of glutamine supplements, but in the meantime, stick with basic supplements that have been proven to have numerous health benefits, like Fish Oil and Multivitamins.
