How to tell if Fruit is Ripe

Bananas are dear to my heart for several reasons. Firstly, they work as an excellent source of energy as well as a nice word for pronunciation in the English classes that I teach on a daily basis.

From a consumer's point of view, the rearing of crops is anything but my field of expertise yet there are some farmers that are 'one' with the earth. It's a beautiful thing that you would understand if you tilled the land yourself.

City-dwellers like us would have no understanding of this unless you do take care of the land during the right season, and then get back to your day job… until the time when "fruit of your labor" is ripe.

Signs of Ripe Fruit: Not Rocket Science

Everybody enjoys fruit. Ripe fruit, that is. Not under or overripe fruit. Yet if you aren't sure about how you are going to find fruit that is absolutely ripe for the picking (even it means from the supermarket), you should know that picking fruit isn't rocket science.

Because it isn't…

Since it is a tangible thing, all you need to do is use your nose, ears and eyes to find out whether or not the fruit is ripe or not.

So, are there tips that you can use to pick ripe fruits? You bet your a** there is…

Tips to Pick Ripe Fruit

Tip #1: Color

Perhaps one of the most simplest ways by which you can determine whether fruit is ripe or not. Yeah, the color can give it all away. Take for example, strawberries that is bright red with a green top. Doesn't it give you the impression that it is ripe for consumption?

Or a banana, which is bright yellow with a few brown spots on the top?

Look for these when you head out to the supermarket to purchase fruits that you like.

Tip #2: Sheen

A dead giveaway when it comes to ripe fruit is their waxy or shiny appearance. One look at the fruit under proper lighting and that should be your second factor to finding ripe fruit.

Who says that looks don't count, huh?

Tip #3: Firmness

Much like how a firm (read as: tight) body tells you how toned a person really is, it isn't very different with fruits either. Think about "The Joker" and his line: "Oh, you must be Harvey's squeeze"… and then give the fruit a bit of a you-know-what.

If it holds, you can be sure that the fruit is ripe. Just make sure it doesn't entail squashing! If the fruit gives way easily, then you can be sure that it is overripe, and a bad choice for eating.

If you are looking for mangoes or apples, this is one aspect that you must keep in mind.

Tip #4: Aroma

Fruits often smell like women we love, although the concept of 'ripeness' isn't a parallel that we should draw here. Don't you just want to just hold them from behind and take in that sweet aroma (as corny as this sounds)?

Each fruit will have that distinct aroma, and it something that you should look for, much like in sharing the company of a beautiful woman!
