One of my favorite romantic movies of all time has been 'A Good Year' for a long time. Yes, the one in which has Russell Crowe woos his childhood sweetheart while inheriting his uncle's chateau in Provence, France.
While Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe continue to make the big bucks with their association in Gladiator, this flick was not so well received by the critics in Hollywood, especially with the remarks made about Americans.
Of course, in the battle for who is the best, the showdown always comes down to the Americans and the French, but one wonders what would have happened to France if the Americans didn't join World War II. Gotcha!
But I digress!
As the movie plays itself out, and apart from the hurried romance pointed out by the critics, there is one thing that really was the movie's saving grace – yes, the underlying drama that surrounds Max's vineyard and the importance of the fruit (um! grapes, in this case) it bears…
What this movie also refers to is the extent to which the trained agriculturist (OK, farmer) will go to protect his property, not just for profits but for his love of the land, and the harmony he feels with it.
Signs of Ripe Fruit
It isn't very different when it comes to spotting ripe (and overripe) fruit. And almost everyone who loves fruit (and who doesn't?) should realize the importance of recognizing ripe fruit, which is just right for eating immediately.
For one, it's not rocket-science. There are just some things that one needs to keep in mind when going out to the supermarket looking for their favorite fruits even if it as simple as using your ears, nose and eyes to find fruit that is just ripe (and just right) to eat.
Tips to picking Ripe Fruit
1. Color o
The color of a fruit often indicates its ripeness. If you do not have this information, you can always look for this information (especially for seasonal fruits) over the internet. For example, almost always a strawberry that is ripe is bright red with a green top. Bananas are always bright yellow with brown spots at the top.
2. Shiny lustre
Almost all fruits have a waxy or shiny appearance when they are ripe, so it is a good idea to have a good look at them under a decent light, and pick the ones with a shiny lustre to them.
3. Firmness
You can find out whether a fruit is ripe or not by squeezing it lightly (but not hard enough to damage the fruit, of course). The firmness of a fruit gives away whether it is ripe or not. On the other hand, if the fruit is soft, then you'd know that it is overripe. For example, an apple will be firm if it is just ripe while it will give way if it is too ripe. A mango is another example of this, where it will give in just a bit if it is ripe, and will be almost too easy to squeeze when overripe.
4. Aroma
Although, fruits don't necessarily give off a vibrant aroma like some good food, but each fruit has a distinctly sweet aroma, when it is ripe and which differs from the not-so-pleasant smell when it is overripe.
In Closing
So it's not very hard to tell whether fruit is ripe or not, as one just has to use his senses to do so. Perhaps it is in the simplest things that one finds solutions to the most complex problems.
