I'm on first day of trying out a standing desk. Instead of buying a new desk I just but a shelf on the wall above the desk and created a simple stand for the keyboard and mouse that can be removed anytime if I want to go back to sitting. I just have to bring the monitors down to eye level. So far the legs are a bit tired, but I'm sure I'll adjust after a week or so.

Ikea has one (Fredrik) under $200, but because I move so often I've gone the whatever's handy route. In a pinch I use laptop only; usually I use a laptop with external keyboard and mouse. Even after I got used to the standing desk, I found that just standing was a bit hard on the feet and legs, so in order to keep moving I got a wobble board aka balance board (http://www.fitter1.com/Catalog/Items/WB.aspx). Been doing it this way for about two years, and I love it! I find it helps to put rubber padding on top of the balance board. Yesterday I bought an inflatable balance disc (http://www.amazon.com/GOGO-Balance-Exercise-Training-Stability/dp/B001KOD92Q) to stand on; not sure whether I like it yet Thanks, and good luck!

Thanks for this post! It's right on.

I built an add-on to my current desk to convert it to a stand up desk. So far I haven't wanted to go back to sitting. Its been about 3 weeks.

Here is a photogallery to give you an idea of it.:

Another adjustable height desk / standing desk alternative that I keep hearing about is the GeekDesk (http://www.geekdesk.com). I haven't bought one yet, but my buddy swears by his. They seem to be the most cost-effective one out there.

Thanks for posting your temporary setup -- I did something similar (you validated me :) ) when I was trying to see how I would like standing part of the day. (Love it!)

Glad to hear you're still enjoying it, I'm looking to try something like this myself, but most of the already made ones are WAY more than I'd like to spend.

Thanks JT, no problem!

That desk is very nice in that it can transition from standing to sitting desk very easily. The price is a bit steep, but if you can afford it, I say go for it.

As for the chair, the studies and thoughts on these seem to vary quite a bit. Ideally, if you could stay completely upright at all times, it may help, but it would require a little getting used to.

The critics say backless chairs and exercise balls promote slouching if the back tires after an extended period, placing more strain on the vertebrae.
