Weekly Recap (June 4 – June 10)
This was my first week of circuit training in a while, probably about 4 months or so, since I've been trying to concentrate more on heavy lifting and bulking lately. I'm getting gradually stronger and feel a lot better, but the bulking was starting to get a little too "bulky". I've gained a lot of muscle compared to my previously skinny self, but I've also picked up some fat along the way, which is to be expected during a bulking phase. Once I crossed the 20% bodyfat mark though, I knew it was time to cut it back, which brings me to my new weekly feature: "Quest for Ripped Abs". Beginning this week, I will post a picture of my abs here every Sunday as I try to strip away the fat. They are already starting to take shape a little bit, but I've got quite a layer of extra meat to cut through before they can really qualify as "Ripped".

So, enter the dreaded Circuit Training! For those that don't know, circuit training is just doing all your lifts for the day one right after the other in one long circuit, then you rest, then you do it all over again one or two more times. For example, you would do 10 squats, then right to 10 bench presses, then right to 10 pullups, then right to 10 lunges, etc. through about 7-10 exercises. As you can probably imagine, doing that many lifts in that short of a time span will definitely get you breathing hard! It's an awesome combination of cardio and strength training all in one intense workout.
For the next 3 weeks (plus the one I just finished), I'm doing circuit training on Monday's and Wednesday's and more "regular" heavy lifting on Friday's, with core days and cardio days on the four "off" days. Although you may have noticed in my Daily Updates on the forums that my exercise bike went haywire today. It was counting the miles in 0.4 and 0.16 increments, meaning it said I went 8.992 miles in 16 minutes! I'm getting better and faster and have built up to about 5.5 miles in that time, but definitely not 9 miles just yet! Hopefully that was just a temporary glitch and will be working right again on my next cardio day, but we'll have to find out.
Last update for the week is I'm finally ready to upgrade my PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells. If you haven't seen them, they are dumbbells that you can switch in and out all the way from 5 pounds each to 50 pounds each. They are great for home use because it's like having a whole set of dumbells but they only take up room enough for one set. Kind of hard to explain if you've never heard of them, but here's a picture that will explain it better than I can: Power Block Adjustable Dumbbells.
Anyway, my point is when I bought them I got the "medium" set, which means they go up to 50 pounds each. The small set went up to about 20 pounds each, and the big set went up to about 100 pounds each. I remember trying to carry my two 50 pound boxes out of the store about a year ago and thinking that I would never have to get any heavier than this! But it's pretty cool now to look back, because now I've gotten to the point where 50 pounds isn't enough for a couple of my exercises like DB Bench Press, Lunges, and Weighted Situps. The PowerBlocks are upgradeable, so all I have to do is buy the "add-on set" this week, which will mean they can go up to about 100 pounds each. Now when I get too big for those that will really be nice!
That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at the forums in this thread: Personal Daily Workout Log.
