Among purists in the dental community, the term 'cosmetic dentistry' is a phrase that is scorned upon, as it is considered a marketing ploy. Of course, almost every dentist practice has the word 'smile' inserted somewhere or the other in their brochure.
And it works, and of course, this has to do with people wanting to 'look good' and why not… right?
But there's a fine line between obsessiveness and just taking good care of yourself. And this is where the business of cosmetics, a billion-dollar industry, has cashed in over the last few years.
Commercial Cosmetic Products & their Hazards
The Food and Drug Administration defines cosmetics as "intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or functions."
While most manufacturers consider their products as either decorative or care cosmetics, which spans creams, lotions, powders and perfumes to hair colors, gels, deodorants and hair sprays, the negative effects of these products on the individual's looks and health are becoming more and more evident these days.
Commercial Cosmetic Products: A "Con" Job?
In understanding the effects of using commercial cosmetic products for so long now, this has led to the production of natural cosmetic products of which the lack of use of preservatives (like in its commercial version) is its biggest plus point.
And this is where the biggest point of the debate also comes in: toxic chemicals.
As most people have discovered, components used in these commercial cosmetic products have been labeled as 'toxins' and have been hidden very well by companies who are out to make a serious profit.
Most of these products are used either for your skin, hair and body that is almost used by every woman throughout the day, leading to effects that can be rather euphemistically termed as 'undesirable'.
So what does one do when society demands that one takes care of themselves in this situation?
The answer to that lies in the use of herbal and organic products for better body, skin and hair care for both the long and short-term.
Organic Products
There are several examples to illustrate the benefits of organic cosmetic products as opposed to its commercial versions. As most of the ingredients used in organic cosmetic products are 'natural', there is no need for preservatives and hence, the shelf life of these products are much much longer, spanning at least 2-3 years.
And so, not only does one look natural when using organic makeup or its range of care cosmetics but there is no question of having to deal with side effects that are a part of using commercial products.
To see how serious this problem really is, take a look at this list of carcinogens used in these synthetic cosmetic products.
In Closing
In a world where first impressions count for a lot, cosmetics might seem to give one that edge but with the world moving towards a safer (read: natural) way of looking beautiful and cleanliness, it looks like what has stood the test of time is the importance of being open and authentic about one's looks through the use of these organic cosmetic products.
However, almost every time, a healthy and clean set of pearly whites often does the trick…
