Bones could help fight obesity and diabetes

Yesterday, we discussed how muscles are made. Well, not to be outdone, the skeleton has chimed in with some new tricks of its own.

Turns out there's more to your old bag of bones than previously thought. Besides the whole "keeping you from melting into a flesh-colored puddle" thing, new research found that your bone cells produce a hormone called osteocalcin.

Osteocalcin helps your body regulate blood sugar, which could be good to know in developing cures and treatments for obesity and diabetes.

Even better news: A related study found that 16 weeks of resistance training boosted blood levels of the hormone by 19 percent.

So, if walking upright is your kind of thing, then help out your skeleton by pumping out a few dumbbell reps this weekend.
