Eric Cressey's Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program
Weekly Recap (October 19-26, 2008)
I touched on adjusting my calories and nutrient breakdown last week, and I was going to wait until this week to have an even day to start on, but I just couldn't wait and started my semi-keto diet on Thursday.
I had heard of keto (aka ketogenic) diets several times but never bothered to actually see what they were about.
It turns out they are strikingly similar to the direction I've been moving in on my own anyway.
It's always nice to come to a conclusion on your own, then have it backed up by popular science and common knowledge.
The idea is to take my low-carb approach and make it even lower carb.
My only hesitation was that I was already consuming more than enough protein, and I wanted to actually decrease protein intake, but then I would have to increase fats even more to account for the lost carbs.
I wasn't 100% sure how "healthy" it would be to have fats make up the vast majority of my calories, even though I knew better than "fat is evil" like many people believe.
So, I was glad to see that ketogenic diets are usually based around these ratios: 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs.
Now, the reason I say I'm going to be doing a semi-keto diet is because my ratios come out closer to 65:25:10.
Although, there tends to be some debate on whether or not to count fiber in the carb percentage. If I left fiber out, then I would be pretty much right on target with a typical keto diet.
It's only been 3 days since I started, so I obviously don't expect to see any real results until next week's measurements.
It took a bit of tweaking to get the ratios just right, especially with nearly all whole and natural foods, so if you want a template to try out for yourself, you can see my exact breakdown here.
The "Maximum Strength" workouts were excellent as always, in addition to two speed camp sessions this week where I had two of my best performances so far.
My strength and conditioning are both really improving, and I feel like I'm really on a roll all around!
That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at Geek2Freak.com.

5 Tips to Lower Your Resting Heart Rate
In the worlds of physical fitness and cardiac health your resting heart rate – the number of times your heart beats per minute when you are sitting quietly – is as important as getting your heart into the "zone" for maximum calorie burning efficiency.
For athletes, a low resting heart rate is usually a sign of good health, though for those who are extremely sedentary it can be a sign of heart disease.
For all of us, heart health is one more factor in qualifying for an affordable health insurance quote.
Generally speaking, your resting heart rate should be no higher than 70 bpm (beats per minute), and having a higher one, according to an Italian survey, can increase the risk of dying from heart disease by up to 78%.
How, then, can you reduce your resting heart rate, and improve your overall health at the same time?
Lower Your Resting Heart Rate
- Stay hydrated. Drinking water isn't just good for your skin and your digestive tract, it helps keep your blood flowing through your veins as well. Eight glasses of water a day is the general rule, but you should increase that if you live in an extremely dry climate, or routinely engage in extreme physical activity.
- When you've got to go… This may be a little bit delicate, but it's really important to your heart, as well as your kidneys, to relieve yourself when you feel the urge. Don't hold it. A full bladder stresses your entire circulatory system, and can increase your heart rate by up to nine beats per minute.
- Get some rest. An Australian study that involved rousing volunteers from their sleep many times a night (often with loud noises) found that being startled from sleep can increase your heart rate by 13 beats per minutes.
Even without being rudely awakened by loud noises, however, sleep is an important part of fitness and health. Weight loss, for example, is almost impossible without regularly getting about eight hours of rest each night.
- Get a massage. Massage, meditation, a warm bubble bath – anything that puts you into a relaxed state also reduces your resting heart rate. A British study even found that when volunteers received hour-long reflexology treatments, their resting heart rates decreased by an average of eight beats per minute.
- Exercise regularly. Cardio is the key – aerobics, running, biking, swimming – anything that gets your blood pumping is good, and it also increases the efficiency of your heart, reducing the number of beats per minute required to keep your circulatory system functioning whether you're active or resting.
If you're already exercising routinely, consider increasing the intensity of your cardio workouts: if you're already walking, jog. If you're a jogger, start running. The trick is to vary the pace: do three minutes at 70% of your maximum heart rate, followed by four at 90%.
Reducing your normal resting heart rate temporarily is easy. Keeping it low takes work and patience.
Be sure to seek medical advice before starting any exercise regime if you've never exercised before, and pay attention to your body.
What's your resting heart rate? The best time to test is first thing in the morning before even getting out of bed.

Eric Cressey's Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program
Weekly Recap (October 12-19, 2008)
It was one of those Perfect Storm weeks where my good measurements went up, while my waist dropped nearly a full inch, and I only lost about 1 pound overall!
I kept carbs low again, which I plan to do from now on, because not only I am getting better results, but I actually feel better as well.
I'm averaging only about 150 grams of carbs on weight training days and just over 100 on cardio/off days.
Any fears I had about having low energy on a low-carb diet are completely gone, because I've felt great in every workout while still increasing strength, and I blasted through, not one, but two very intense speed camp sessions this week.
One change I'm going to be making this week is combining my two afternoon snacks into one and my two late snacks into one.
Right now, I'm eating 9 meals every day, spaced out about every two hours.
With this change, I would be eating only 7 meals per day, and have 3-4 hours between "feedings" in the second half of the day, which would free up some time.
I'm confident they will still be frequent enough to keep my metabolism revved up, so we'll see!
The only other adjustment is I will be subbing almonds/peanut butter for one of my chicken breasts.
Right now, I'm consuming nearly 300 grams of protein every day, and I just don't need that much — nobody does!
So, by making that swap, I'll still get the same amount of calories with a fraction of the protein.
Of course, I'll be upping my fat intake a bit, but, as always, we'll just have to see the results.
I think both of these changes will be major improvements in the long run.
That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at Geek2Freak.com.

Weekly Recap (October 5-12, 2008)
My Does Fruit Make You Fat experiment took another turn this week.
In the name of consistency, I decided to keep my diet exactly the same, even though this was my recovery week, with half the workout time of a normal week.
In retrospect, I obviously should have lowered my total daily calories to keep the overall ratio consistent, but there's still something to be said for the fact that I only gained about a pound.
My weight-lifting sessions went from 4 2-hour workouts to 4 1-hour workouts, since this was "Very Light" recovery week in "Maximum Strength."
Even with the 4-hour drop-off in physical activity and not lowering calories at all, I still didn't gain much, thanks, I believe, to the low-carb approach.
As I said, this experiment is always ongoing, and this week it will actually make sense to keep my calories the same, since I'll be starting Phase 3 of "Maximum Strength," and workouts should be back up around the 2-hour mark.
I actually feel and look leaner than the numbers say, but I'm confident the numbers will catch up with my growing ego at the end of this week.
I'm really enjoying taking an even more obsessed interest in my nutrition, because it keeps me entirely focused and will continue to produce great results.
That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at Geek2Freak.com.
