Weekly Recap (July 27 - August 3, 2008)

Welcome to Ground Hog Week, where I find myself in a similar situation to last week, although less extreme.

Just like last week, my calves couldn't take the heat, and I've got the itchiest grass pox I could ever imagine.

The good news?

Last week, my calf pain following Speed Camp Day was about an 8, and today it's only about a 2; last week, my grass pox were new and severely itched for about 3-4 days, and this week I was more prepared by applying anti-itch lotion right away, which looks like it will cut the torture time in half.

I'm a little disappointed that my calves couldn't hold up yesterday, even after a full week of laying off of them completely, but at least they do seem to be improving.

As with any new training, my body just needs time to adapt to the new demands, but hurry up!

As for the grass pox, I really had learned my lesson, but was thrown off guard when we did some unscheduled grass work yesterday.

Now, I'll keep my shirt on throughout the whole class just to be safe, because even with the anti-itch cream, that first night absolutely sucks!

Given my lack of activity, I was pleased that I didn't gain too much fat, though I did add about a pound and increase my waist measurement.

Of course, my scale decided that I've actually LOST body fat, but again, that's why I place much more emphasis on the measurements and pictures.

Since I expect my calves to be back to 100% by tomorrow, or even tonight, I'm going to resume my plan from last week.

I'll be doing body-weight workouts on Monday and Wednesday, followed by the official Pre-Testing Day on Friday for the "Maximum Strength" program.

That will give me two days to recover next weekend, and I'll start the first Maximum Strength workout on Monday, continuing through the full 16-week course.

I'm excited to see the results and how much I can increase my strength.

That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at Geek2Freak.com.

I know I sound like a total noob, but what is a "Speed Camp"?

Great blog by the way, just getting into fitness blogging myself and found your cool site.

No need to feel like a noob PW, because I know it sounds like it could be a specific exercise or program, but it's just basically a group exercise class.

Kind of like any other aerobic/spinning class, but we meet every Saturday and do running and core drills in a big field.

Ahh, thanks for that.

Do you find doing these cardio sessions very regularly is upsetting your strength gains?

Also, don't you just get plain tired?

I make sure to get plenty of extra calories to fuel the extra work, but it's definitely something I'm keeping an eye on, especially given my body type.

And yes, I get absolutely exhausted! But just like any other challenging exercise, I enjoy it, and my endurance increases with each session.
