Eric Cressey's Maximum Strength: Get Your Strongest Body in 16 Weeks with the Ultimate Weight-Training Program

Weekly Recap (September 21-28, 2008)

Wow, VERY interesting week!

First, the workouts went great, as usual. My undying love for "Maximum Strength" only grows stronger every week.

Clusters were a beast again, but there's only one more week left of those. Unfortunately, that's this week which also just happens to be "Very High" load week.

"Very High" load combined with clusters is a frightening thought, but I'll be ready for my first dose tomorrow morning!

Ok, now for my nutritional experiment and the shocking results…

After last week's nearly identical results to the week before, I had found my maintenance level. This wasn't my goal, because I'm actually trying to build muscle, but it was interesting nonetheless.

I figured finding my baseline was a perfect time for a little testing, so I became my own guinea pig.

Carbs have been getting bashed recently for being the baddest fat-storing, blubber-adding nutrients of all.

I've noticed lately that this seems to be true for me, even though 100% of my carbs come from whole natural foods — none from candy, sodas, etc.

So, I decided to increase my carbs by about 100-200 grams per day (total of 200-300 per day) while decreasing my overall calories by nearly 400 calories per day!

Even with my carb increase, this is still a fairly low-carb diet by most standards, but I knew by decreasing total calories at the same time, I could really isolate the results of the additional carbs.

I expected to maybe lose a couple of pounds because of the fairly significant calorie-drop, while adding a little fat (if my hypothesis of carbs equal fat was correct).

Before I get to the astounding results, let me first say that everybody's body is different, and some people can handle and benefit from more carbs than others, but not I!

I actually gained almost 3 full pounds, even though I took in nearly 400 less total calories per day, and added almost an inch to my waist!

This was only in one week, and my experiment won't be complete until I follow-up this week by keeping total calories about the same, but replacing nearly all carbs with protein and fat.

The only carbs I'll consume are the ones that are naturally in things like vegetables, peanut butter, almonds, etc., which should put me at only about 100 carbs per day.

If my theory is correct, my weight should stay about the same, dropping maybe a couple of pounds, but also losing fat and decreasing my waist size.

This should be interesting, and I'm really looking forward to the results.

For any other amateur scientists out there, you can analyze my highly-detailed daily diet yourself.

That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at Geek2Freak.com.
