I love the Heineken ads that have avid soccer fans getting all warmed up on the beer because it depicts a reality that not all of us have ‘greatness thrust upon us’. Of course, not all soccer players were gifted like the current soccer geniuses such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Last week, a couple of my students asked me to join them for a soccer match for two 30 minute halves. Man, I was about to drop dead as soon as the referee blew the final whistle, and I was just conserving my energy in playing defense.
(And yes, one of my students suggested that I was biting more than I could chew in taking a corner kick from the right… and yours truly didn’t disappoint… ahem!)
The only thing that crossed my mind is: How do these guys do it day after day for 90 minutes?
Soccer Field Size – Does it really matter for “seasoned” players?
If you didn’t know this already, the soccer field size is about 100 meters in length and about 60-64 meters in breadth. And if you’re an avid soccer fan like I am, you’ll notice that these guys sometimes show incredible bursts of energy well into the match that sometimes is a match-winner.
Yes, noone does it better than Al Pacino in describing that the athlete who is able to go that extra inch is the one who gets the glory. It’s no different in soccer either…
And I wonder if these players ever feel like I did after those 60 minutes although it seems unlikely because they’ve been playing for years. They’re the ones who have gone the distance… that extra inch every time!
And when I say distance – I mean, traveling around the world, and bringing out that special something every time the team was down. Goddamm, that rush when Messi pulls something out of his hat is indescribable…
There is absolutely no sign of fatigue and I guess that it’s the adrenalin rush that comes with playing in front of thousands of people (almost 92 thousand). Yet there’s no doubt that it takes years of hard work and practice for one to get up to those fitness levels.
Think about body fat on these players – no chance in hell. That should tell you something, shouldn’t it?
The fact that there isn’t any chance of any body fat at all because of the number of times you have to run up and down a field, the countless practice sessions, the abstinence from substances that can hamper your progress and the list goes on.
All in all, you can say that their lifestyle is definitely a healthy one because right from nutrition to exercise, they are trained to perform at their peak. For get body fat… and this applies to anyone who plays a team sport such as this even for fun!
While running around this large field for 90 minutes might be another day’s work for these players, it still remains a daunting physical workout for everyone else. That’s for sure especially if they’re football fans…
