One of the most intriguing combinations for a drink that I’ve come across for some time now is the combination of branded whisky and warm water. Warm water… what the hell?
While I thrive on beer and a bit of rum and coke now and then, this combo was promptly made by a friend who was down with a runny nose (a cold, actually) but still wanted to have a ‘stiff one’. Perhaps it is one of the strangest ways by which one can get warm apart from just wearing protective clothing during this time of the year when the “cold” seems to pretty much overpower our mental and physical faculties.
While most folks refer to woolen clothing for the winter especially when you hit the great outdoors, heaters are often considered a must in some considered where your spit turns to ice even before it hits the ground.
U.S Winter Mortality Rates and its relationship with Hypothermia
If you’ve lived in a region that is considered to be one of the coldest parts in the world, you’d be familiar with the situation of hypothermia that results in death, thanks to your body temperature dropping so low which will slow down your metabolism as well as the complete shutdown of bodily functions. And these fatalities occur because your body is unable to conserve a minimum amount of heat that is needed to ‘live’.
According to a report compiled by the US National Center for Health Statistics between 2001 and 2007, one of the most startling conclusions that experts have come up with is the fact that more people die in the United States in the month of December, January, February and March than during the rest of the months of the year.
The difference between these two stats is that there are almost 95,000 more deaths during these three months than for the rest of the year, and by this, it should be clear that hypothermia is a serious threat if one does not take the adequate precautions.
Tips on how to stay warm
Tip #1: Clothing
While most people are used to getting out their winter-wear in the aforementioned months every year, another interesting option is the new-fangled thermal wear (under armour coldgear is one such company) that works to keep your body temperature inside. One should be very careful of fake thermal clothing products that mimic these rigorously tested products.
Tip #2: Exercise
Being one of the best ways to increase body temperature, playing winter sports or even basic cardio can do the trick. Just do anything but sit down for long periods of time (that will drop body temperature) during the winter months even if it means doing the chores or playing in the snow outside. Just stay active!
Tip #3: Other Warmth giving ideas
Of course, traditionally speaking, this time of the year encourages one to indulge in “liquids” that you might not necessarily consume at any other time. While one should feel free to do so, remember that these liquids should also serve the purpose of keeping your body warm.
Using a heater or even a fireplace can be an excellent idea if one wishes to stay warm. Just remember that for the former, you have to keep it turned on!
In Closing
And perhaps one of the best ways to stay warm during the winter (according to another’s friend’s suggestion) is to “huddle up close” (cough cough) to the one you love most during times of extreme cold. Talk about the perfect excuse for love-making…
