Weekly Recap (November 23-30, 2008)

Well, this morning started off in a unique way…

It's not too uncommon for the mighty rushing river urge to wake me up and let me know it's time to drain the dragon, but today's nature call was a bit deeper.

I'll spare you the long list of "dropping the kids off at the pool" comparisons, but suffice it to say that my prediction of gaining back a pound or two this week was… uh… flushed down the toilet.

After cutting cardio completely this week, it was still a little surprising to come in over a pound under last week, even after I dropped a massive four pounds last time.

Also, the digital scale has a mind of its own, as usual, and decided that I'm carrying around a whopping 18.5% body fat.

Sure, I may not quite be at my goal of sub-teen-ville (aka 12.9% or less), but I have to think that I'm at least a bit lower than 18.5 percent, especially considering my waist measurement dropped nearly half an inch to only 32.1.

If I can just accept the concept of losing fat and toning my body, then I'll soon be under 32 inches for the first time since I can remember.

I always get frustrated when I start dropping weight, then I overcompensate to get it back, adding fat in the process.

Once and for all, I'm going to just let the pounds drop if they must, as long as my strength remains, so I know I'm not losing much, if any, muscle.

I've been so obsessed with getting to an arbitrary weight of 200 pounds, but I want to place more emphasis on body composition while maintaining strength.

If that means getting down in the 180 range, then so be it, because then I can build as much as possible from that foundation by adding more protein instead of extra carbs.

I've been experimenting with "carb-up" days while on a ketogenic diet that includes only about 70-80 grams of carbs per day (only about 40-50 if you subtract the fiber).

My thinking is that doing so on Monday's will refill my glycogen stores in preparation for the week's workouts, fueling muscle building and gains, while still burning fat for fuel several days a week.

There's always tweaking going on, but if I can really finally let go of just wanting to maintain any and all weight and focus on just maintaining muscle, I'm confident I can take things to the next level!

Don't forget this is the last week of "Maximum Strength" coming up, so I'll have my "Moving Day" results to see the progress I've made next week.

It's been a phenomenal and exciting program from start to finish, and this week is a "Very, Very Light" load week in preparation for Saturday's final 1-Rep Max tests.

That about raps it up for this week. See you next Sunday and don't forget you can follow my daily updates over at Geek2Freak.com.
